Walgreens will sell CBD creams, patches and sprays in nearly 1,500 stores in select states, the company told CNBC on Wednesday. Walgreens declined to specify which brands it would carry.

“This product offering is in line with the efforts to supply a wider range of accessible health insurance and wellbeing services and products to best meet the needs and preferences of our own customers,” Walgreens spokesman Brian Faith said within an email to CNBC.

Rival drugstore chain CVS introduced CBD-containing topicals, including creams and salves, to stores in eight states earlier in March. Since the non-psychoactive cannabis compound becomes one of the hottest ingredients in consumer products, retailers are carefully evaluating the market.

Consumers are increasingly interested in CBD, which offers to help anything from anxiety to pain even though there exists scant evidence backing up these claims. And while CBD produced from hemp is now legal thanks to the farm bill Congress passed late last year, the FDA says companies still can’t add CBD to food or market it as a nutritional supplement.

The regulatory uncertainty has left some large companies on the sidelines for the time being. Selling CBD-infused beauty and skin-maintenance systems brings much less risk, rendering it an obvious initial step for retailers.

What exactly is CBD? CBD is the acronym for “Cannabidiol” which is actually a chemical found within the Cannabis sativa plant.

Where does CBD come from? CBD is primarily derived from hemp, a variety of the cannabis plant that has virtually no THC (under .3%).

Is hemp just like marijuana? No. Hemp and marijuana both are plants inside the cannabis species, but they are different varieties. Hemp contains little or no THC, the substance in marijuana that produces a “high.”

Is CBD safe for use? CBD is thought to be safe. However, patients should first check using their health care provider or pharmacist and ask if CBD items are right to them.
